Description
"My initial interest in sustainable food systems was launched by the First Nations Food, Nutrition and Environment Study (FNFNES), which was being conducted by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne's Environment program and the University of Ottawa and Montreal. I was not a big part of this project, but I found myself carefully following the progression of this project. The combination of FNFNES and the collection of walleye made me realize the importance of heritage food systems. It was then that I would make it one of my life goals to help preserve heritage food systems of my region in the face of the rapidly changing western food system. This blog will work to preserve the Kanien'kéha feast. Through the sharing of seasonal food recipes and regional food related topics from the St. Lawrence Valley and Adirondack Mountain region there is hope that this blog will foster further discussions related to health and well-being. Additionally, this blog will serve as a springboard for those interested in adopting a diet consisting of local, seasonal heritage foods from the North Country region of New York State and Canada."
