Description
"Amid a global water security crisis exacerbated by climate change and biodiversity loss, this research explores how nature-based solutions (NBS) provide elegant solutions for recentering nature in 21st century global water policy. This research posits that the NBS concept is not new. It has been implemented by Indigenous Peoples as a form of water policy through Indigenous and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (ITEK) for centuries. NBS have only recently been 'discovered' by Western-emanating water policy. This has coincided with the rise of natural capital accounting methods that have quantified the value of ecosystem services for both water security and climate co-benefits in dollar terms with increasing sophistication and in line with capitalist ideology. Drawing on examples from 54 communities across 28 countries, this research explores how ITEK often prioritizes the protection of upstream ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, and grasslands, for these ecosystems' ability to filter water, regulate water flow, and protect downstream communities from floods and droughts."--from leaf 2
