"This qualitative case study explored the role of outdoor adventure programming in Jewish education to support identity development in youth and young adults. Through a key informant interview with Nadav Slovin, the Executive Director, and interviews with two program staff, a post-program survey, participant observation, and textual document analysis, the case study examined the motivations of the staff and how the curriculum was received by participants. The literature review explored the current discourse around the Jewish landscape in the United States, exploring topics such as assimilation and the efficacy of experiential Jewish education programs in strengthening Jewish identity. The study moved beyond questions of whether the programs work or not, and focused on understanding the participant experience to identify the elements that participants found most engaging and any elements of the program that participants struggled to connect with. The goal was to develop a framework that organizations could use to assess their programs and provide a more enriching experience for participants, drawing on experiential education frameworks and culturally responsive pedagogical theory. The findings of this study offer valuable insights into the potential and impact of Jewish experiential education programs. The study identified that staff were motivated by their own experiences in informal education and their desire to connect Jewish traditions with outdoor programming. Participants were drawn to the program primarily for the outdoor experience and the hope of meeting people their age with similar interests. Interactions with other participants were by far the most meaningful and important moments for respondents, highlighting the importance of human connections and appreciation of diversity in Jewish immersive experiences. The study provided insights into the impact and potential of Jewish experiential education programs. The findings suggest a framework that organizations can use to assess and enhance their programming.
