Description
"One spring evening, the town of Covenly gains three new residents, whose strangeness makes some of the other citizens uneasy. Hildegurp, Yuckmina, and Glubbifer set up shop, hoping for a fresh start and a new business: a pet store. Their first customer is nine-year-old Jessica Nibley, who has lost her pet goat and hopes the sisters can help track it down. But as they exit the shop, they discover a mangled note with missing pieces that suggests the sisters aren't welcome in Covenly. Now they have two mysteries to solve: a mysterious note and a missing goat. As they broom off to search for clues, they meet other Covenly residents. Eventually they figure out that Chelsea wrote the mysterious note, which she left for the sisters with a casserole. But the goat got there first, as is evident from the curious orange sauce with bits of note stuck around its mouth. Jessica fits the missing pieces into the original note, which, to their surprise, they discover to be a letter of welcome. This whimsical mystery is full of word play and humorous misunderstanding, and is also kid-empowering as Jessica takes the lead and functions as the sisters' moral compass. The creation of the sisters was inspired by Macbeth's three sisters, and the idea is that their appearance should be a little unsettling so that readers, like the residents, must learn to accept their character and not judge based on appearances. The story is also about the desire to fit in with a group while also learning to accept oneself. Like the Macbeth characters, the weird sisters make Hurlyburly soup, which is served at the end with the hint that it may have been tampered with magically. Illustrations by Kari Rust will be in black and white with roughly two per chapter. End matter includes a recipe for Hurlyburly soup with thanks to Macbeth and substitutions for hard-to-find ingredients such as toad venom and eye of newt."--,Provided by publisher.
